North America Sangha Day Celebration: 1,200 Attendees Join in Cultivating Merit

On October 2, 2024, about 130 officers from the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) Santa Fe Springs Area gathered in the courtyard of Hsi Lai Temple for a formal inspection of their uniforms, firearms, and motorcycles. Captain Melissa Hammond and Officer Danny Margaris led the inspection. The officers received a warm welcome from Venerable Hui Dong, Abbot of Hsi Lai Temple, who was joined by Venerables Hui Cheng and Hui Shiuan, as well as Alex Wu, President of Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) Los Angeles Chapter.

Captain Hammond highlighted the stress and dangers that come with police work, stressing the importance of keeping firearms in top condition. The annual inspection helps ensure that. Over the years, CHP has provided traffic control and security for large events at Hsi Lai Temple, such as the Lunar New Year celebrations. She also noted that officers should always present a professional yet approachable appearance to build trust with the community.

Abbot Venerable Hui Dong expressed his gratitude, saying that having so many officers at the temple made it feel even more secure. He thanked CHP for their continuous support, especially during the Peace Lantern Festival held each Lunar New Year. Offering the temple for the inspection was a small way of showing appreciation for all the hard work CHP does. BLIA Los Angeles also presented a donation to show respect and gratitude for the officers' dedication.

After the inspection, Venerable Hui Cheng led a meditation session, emphasizing the need for inner calm in moments when officers face life-or-death decisions. He shared that a peaceful mind can lead to safer law enforcement.

Officer Margaris thanked Hsi Lai Temple for providing a peaceful setting that helped officers unwind from their stressful jobs. He encouraged them to visit the temple more often and expressed hope that the positive relationship between CHP and Hsi Lai Temple would continue to grow.
