Kaohsiung Pumen Senior High School Alumni, John Wu, Sworn in as the New Chinese-American Mayor of San Gabriel

San Gabriel, CA - On April 2, the inauguration ceremony for the newly elected mayor of San Gabriel took place at the San Gabriel City Council Chamber. John Wu and Denise Menchaca were sworn in as mayor and vice mayor, respectively, with Congresswoman Judy Chu officiating the ceremony. The event drew numerous elected officials, community leaders, and residents, all gathered to offer their congratulations. Notable attendees included Alex Wu, president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA), and Dr. Minh-Hoa Ta, president of the University of the West.

John Wu and his wife, Sunny Chang, both graduated from the tourism department of Kaohsiung Pumen Senior High School in 1993 before moving to the United States with their family. Wu has been a San Gabriel City Council member since 2022 and served as vice mayor since 2023. In his inauguration speech, Wu emphasized his commitment to the three virtues of "Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words, and Think Good Thoughts," promoted by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founding Master of Fo Guang Shan. He promised to collaborate with the vice mayor and colleagues to create a better city, guided by the spirit of “Four Givings.”

Alex Wu, president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the BLIA, highlighted that this event demonstrates the integration of Humanistic Buddhism into the community and its significant impact. It also showcases the global spread of humanistic Buddhism by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, bringing joy to people worldwide.

President Alex Wu, along with Dr. Minh-Hoa Ta, representing Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, the BLIA Los Angeles chapter, and the University of the West, extended congratulations and presented certificates to Mayor John Wu, Vice Mayor Denise Menchaca, and former Mayor John R. Harrington.

Vice Presidents Connie Yip and Steven Chow of the BLIA Los Angeles Chapter, along with President Andy Truong of the San Gabriel Subchapter 2 and Elder Supervisor Lynn Mai Quach of the Monterey Park Subchapter 2, also attended the inauguration ceremony that evening.
